|Each month, this website will interview a local runner. This runner
may not necessarily set records, but instead shows a desire and
dedication for the sport.
Here, the Harris family, which is made up of many runners,
poses for the camera. In the picture are Julia, Libby, Sherrie
and Kent with Kal in front.
Sherrie Harris (age 44), live near Deshler, husband Kent, children Julia, Libby,

accountability issues along with some grant writing. It's the perfect job-8
When did you start running?
I have been running since May 30, 2004. A long, long time ago when I was in
high school I participated in track but it was more of a social event rather than an
athletic endeavor. (Sorry Coach Gibson)
Does anyone else in your family run?
Everybody in my family runs or has been a runner. My husband, Kent, has been
"into" running most of his life. He was a top 5 state finisher a couple times in the
70's and has finished a few marathons. Now he runs in local 5K/10K races.
Currently he is nursing an injury. He is my running role model! Our oldest
daughter, Libby, ran cross country in high school. Our second daughter, Julia,
is a sprinter for PH -she never runs more than 200 meters in a race lol. Our son
who is five just runs all the time!
What motivated you to start running?
I started running this spring partly motivated by watching the high school
distance runners at regionals and just to see if I could. I've been surrounded by
running magazines, running books, and attending the races. It was sort of a
natural progression that took 20 years.
What is your favorite race?
My favorite race has always been the last race I ran. Seriously the Polar Bear
Run at the Defiance Y since I broke 30. The Turkey Trot at Independence on
Thanksgiving was great too. And the LC 5000 was fun. See what I mean?
What is your favorite workout?
I like to run a 10K loop from my house to the top of a hill and back. It's a nice
route and I feel great when I'm done. If I don't have much time I do a 5K or 4 mile
loop from my house.
What are your goals for the future?
I'm trying to increase my base mileage with our getting injured. My goal is to run
a marathon before I turn 50. (I think that is a great goal.)
What is your favorite thing about running?
My favorite thing about running is the solitude. The mental nothingness that
takes over. It's the only time of the day that I'm not multi-tasking.
What is your least favorite thing about running?
I have three least favorite things about running -wind, getting my shoes wet and
the first half mile.
What time of the day do you like to run?
I like to run on still, cool, foggy mornings.
What benefits have you gained from running?
Less stress. More energy. Empowerment.
Embarrassing moments while running?
When I first started running I was embarrassed when anyone would see me
running. I was a walker for years but running? The neighbors would think I lost
my mind. (I'm completely over it now:)
What type of running products do you use or recommend?
I run in New Balance shoes. I have some cold weather tights and some wicking
shirts. I think they are NB too.
Thank you Sherrie for taking the time to answer these questions.
